Marbella vs Estepona vs Sotogrande vs Málaga: which one is actually for you
Four very different places within an hour of each other. Who each one suits, what you give up, and how I would choose.
People say 'the Costa del Sol' as if it were one decision. It is at least four, and they produce completely different lives.

Marbella
The reason most people end up here is boring and correct: everything you need already exists. Schools, doctors, lawyers, gyms, padel courts, restaurants that are open in February, and a critical mass of other people who made the same move. If you are a founder with kids, that infrastructure is worth a lot. The cost is that it is expensive and it is easy to live entirely in English.
Estepona
The best value on this coast and, I think, the most pleasant town centre. Flowers, a promenade you can walk for an hour, a fishing port, a real Spanish rhythm. The trade-off is pure geography: everything east of you is a drive, and in July and August that drive is unrecognisable from the one in March.
Sotogrande
Genuinely lovely and genuinely quiet. Enormous plots, mature trees, world-class golf and polo, a marina, and an international school with a strong reputation. If you want privacy and space and you do not need a town, it is superb. If you like walking out for coffee and bumping into people, you will find it lonely.
Málaga
The one people underrate. It has become a real city again — museums, a proper old town, a tech and startup scene, direct flights everywhere, and a life that does not depend on the season. If your priority is urban energy and career optionality rather than a pool and a padel court, Málaga is very likely the right answer and almost nobody in the relocation brochures tells you that.
How I would choose
Rent for a month in the two that appeal most, in the off-season, and do your ordinary week from each. School run, work, gym, groceries, a Friday night. The place that makes an ordinary Wednesday feel good is the right one. The place that only looks good on a Saturday is a holiday, not a home.

- Is Estepona better than Marbella?
- Estepona is better value, more Spanish in daily life and has a lovelier town centre. Marbella has far more international schools, services and professional network. If integration and cost matter most, choose Estepona; if infrastructure and network matter most, choose Marbella.
- Is Sotogrande a good place to live full time?
- It is excellent if you want space, privacy, golf and a strong international school, and it is very quiet outside the season. People who want to walk to a café and see familiar faces usually find it isolating.
- Should I live in Málaga instead of Marbella?
- Málaga suits you if you want a real city with culture, an airport on the doorstep, a growing tech scene and year-round life independent of tourism. Marbella suits you if you want beach-and-mountain living, international schools and a founder-heavy social circle.
